The condition is often congenital. But it may also develop after pregnancy or due to the patient being overweight. An umbilical hernia is often accompanied by a separation of the muscle of the abdominal wall (diastasis recti). Diastasis recti is when the space between the right and left abdominal muscles has widened and a protrusion of the abdominal wall develops. A special form of this condition is the childhood umbilical hernia, which is the only type of hernia that can heal spontaneously.
