Umbilical hernia is the second most common type of hernia in humans. An umbilical hernia is often congenital. However, it can also occur after pregnancy or if you are overweight. An umbilical hernia is often associated with a widening of the abdominal wall (rectus diastasis). In rectus diastasis, the two straight abdominal wall muscles increasingly diverge, resulting in a typical protrusion of the abdominal wall.
A special form is the umbilical hernia in infants. It is the only type of fracture that can heal spontaneously. After the second year of life, however, a persistent umbilical hernia should also be treated surgically in the child.
